Representation Of Disability; Secret diary of a call girl

In the following essay i will be examining the way representation is shown in the opening scene of the secret diary of a call girl, i will be looking at the Sound,Mise en scene, Editing and Camera: how it is shown throughout the scene.

The editing was shown by the shot that was transitioned from the dad lifting blake to lay him down on the bed, this reveals again his dependancy on others. However there was cuts between the point of view of the flat and the shots of the father portrayed his thoughts and is also confirmed that his actions were shown through him being in the van.The time jumps through a jump out which suggest that he is awaiting some time. The jump cuts in the van with the father which show his anxiety of him, who has to let his son with someone else while he isn't there.
The mise en scene was shown at the beginning when there is a tilt shot, the opening shot is wide and it reveals the wheel chair of the central character which is an ionic symbol of disability. The shot where he is partially undressed, this reveals his lack of ability to do simple tasks which conveys that he must be treated like a child. Similarly, the appartment doesnt have a rampe; it has stairs which means this is not suitable for wheelchair users. The fathers distracted behaviour in the van reveals his discomfort with the awkwardness situation.
Non diegetic sound is introduced and the atmosphere becomes slightly less awkward however the verbal and non-verbal communication shows elemets of unease still. The mastershot is privileged over individual shots, but the girl is higher in the frame than Blake to show she is in control.
On the other hand, the Sound represented by the common experiences like being touched intinately. The non diagetic sound begins at the end of the scene when the call girl [CG] begins to get initemate;(Starts from the sound bridge from the care scene.)
The dialogue reveals the fathers concern about his some can do and the call girl and blake both say email; this indicates that blake is not completely alinated from the world, however blake has arranged this via email which suggests that he wants and is capable of having alot of freedom. The characters sounds are quite weak through their voices which makes their dialogue a contributing factor to the representation of disability because it enhances the awkwardness.
The Camera shots start with tilt down at the start to reveal blake, portrays that the character is disabled, also shows the adjustment which the call girl has to make when addressing someone standing. A medium long shot which show both wheelchair and stairs  which encourages to see blake's perspective of the call girl and the way that the society treats disabled people.
What are the stereotype of disability?
stereotyping is the attitude that all members of a particular group are the same, or else fall into a very small number of types. This is particularly true in the few cases where persons with a disability appear in media. Not only are people with disabilities stereotyped, the full range of disabilities is not reflected in media portrayals. Perhaps the most common stereotype of persons with disabilities is the victim, a character who is presented as a helpless object of pity or sympathy, Representation of people with disabilities, points out that “disabled people, when they feature at all, continue to be all too often portrayed as either remarkable and heroic, or dependent victims. The wheelchair allows the character to be obviously disabled, whilst still looking ‘normal’, and does not therefore present any major challenges for audience identification.”

Are disabled people seen as sexual?
The society does not think of us first and foremost as sexual beings. Most of us are considered objects of care, somebody one has to be nice to. Disabled people are often seen as sick. Sick persons are not expected to have a regular life with social responsibilities such as work, which portray that disabled poele are not seen as sexual.

Hotel babylon . . .

Throughout the scene there is ethnicity shown which convey what the characters are like and how they act. Ethnicity is the cultural values and norms which distinguish the members of a given group from others. An ethnic group is one whose members share a distinct awareness of a common cultural identity, separating them from other groups around them. This used to portray the characters personality and their attitide's.
The scene was in a hotel which shows a rich atmosphere and at first there is a old man sitting on a wheelchair, the black guy goes to him and give's him something which shows respect and shows his personality is represented in a positive way. There is a long shot of the black man walking towards the otherside, the other black man comes out of the swimming pool and starts talking to the guy which showed they were close to one another, however the guy that was wearing the suit he was in such a hurry and he also looked 'gay'this is because of the way his body gesture was shown and he says to the guy your looking good which portrays that he was intrested in him.

We are the introduced to two french maids as the next stereotypes to ethnicity. The scene opens with a mid-shot and this ables us to recognise their occupations as they have their work trolleys. The man on the bed, he was all quiet he said nothing and the background atmosphere was quiet, however the way he was staring at the two cleaners trying to take their clothes he didnt say a word he just glared at them loud music is played. The female's appear to dominate the hotel, the majority of high status workers in the hotel are mainly female's, they lack the male role's.The ethnicity is shown by their accents. Their is a high angle shots shown throughout the scene which represents a high dominence, the low angle shots shows the characters as a weak and low status, but mainly there was medium shots used throughout the scene.
Non diagetic sound was used to represent the tension that was building and the editing was used throughout the scene to create a smooth effect.

In conclusion, ethnicity is very clearly represented in the clip by using stereotypes which are usually associated with a certain type of ethnic.

Blackpool Anlysis . . .

Most films, The opening scene always focus on the mise en  scene, camera, editing and sound these showed the representation that it created. In this following analysis of the opening scene, it will focus on the main four area's.
Camera; the craneshot was used to portray the revealing of the scene to make it look intresting. At first a medium close up of the two cuples talking, then a close up of a man. A long shot of the family sitting around the table. There was also a reverse shot when it went to one shot to another, focusing on the man then women . The closeness of the family, a wiseshot of them. The father looking at the boyfriend from the edge which was a overshoulder shot, therefor it includes two people.
In some shots husand/wife are seperate which suggests their relation is not close which show a weak bond between them. The several shots of the boyfriend and the daughter together portray they have a strong bond for one another. the husband/wife in bed showed a wide shot of the two couple's, a medium shot; his shows theirs some distance from them and when the women kisse's the guys shoulder, the guy smile's and turns his head around which shows he wasnt bothered and intrested.
Sound; At the begining we hear conversation's and the door banging, the sound of footsteps, the natural movement between the sheets, shouting and the sarcastic laugh. The conversation we link it to too the relationship, windchaws filled the awkward moments and also the noises of footsteps and the birds suggested their relationship was not stable at all. In the opening scene, the dad was honest, very confident/offrotive, he had power which showed he was controlling whereas the mum, she was calm, layed back, her tone was soft, the dad never goes over her words, alwasy listen's to her and is the bridge to the husband and daughter. You could hear the guy's anger which showed age, he's sarcastic with his joke's which suggest's he's up himself.
Mise en Scene; The clothing, the both couple's wearing pink shows their not modern, their outfits co-ordinate with one another and through the colour of their clothing portray their couple's and their dresssed a little younger than their age. Therefor the aughter was aged much older than her age, wasnt dressed like a teenager, she was wearing a suit which made her look smart whereas her boyfriend was dressed casual and relaxed, his jeans suggested he's dressed younger which showed a mild age. The colour of their clothing was dull and normal which show they've switch role's with their parent. However their house is not modern. The room is decorated and it shows their in a higher class. The non-verbal language; the father is looking down at steve and his hands are in his pockets which suggest he doesnt want to shake hands, his body gesture showed he wanst bothered.
Editing; Each character get a close up of themselve's throughout the opening scene which show identity and it also show their reaction to one another. The husband and wife are not closse to one another because in the scene theirs not m uch shots of them together whereas the boyfriend and girlfriend are close because there are several shot of them with one another which show they have a strong bond between them.
However  the mise en scene as overall presentation of the scene and it way of defining age, family and relationship. lighting would be something that is played with to reveal characters, their expressions and emotions, this helps the audience to understand them and define the representation of age, family and relationship between the family. In addition the couple's in the film, their relation is strong but whereas them as a family they have problems with getting along with one another which show a weak bond.

Aural language . . .

what we heard in the opening sequence of the film;

- birds tweeting
- tracktor coming on
- roaring of the lion/tiger
- barking of the dog
- the gun shot

How gender is shown . . .?

There is a blonde women, she had a big tracktor, was driving it.
this was shown by her asociation to the guy, she was strong, pro-active, confident, brave, dependant and she was seen as a bold women.
The gender in this film was shown by the women she had alot of power a nd strength, the guy was in  need for the girls help, so it showed in this film the roles were shown reserved this is because the guy was attacked by the tooth tiger so the girl showed her power and helped the man. There is also a use of all diagetic sounds used throughout the film. These were used to show the tension, what is happening throughout the film and to engage peoples intensions to whats been shown.
In this film the protagonist the man and the women is the helper which shows the women has more strength.

Down with love; Opening scene [Nine.Shots]

This shot looks really amazing, the film is set in a beautiful atmosphere, the background, blue suggests a clear, bright day and the buildings/houses look big and the atmosphere looks rich.

This shot looks rich, the building looks beautiful and that it also can mean taht if anyone goes to it they will have an amazing time, its the most biggest building and in the scene; they say if you come here then you can fulfill your dreams and that many people go there just to fulfill their dreams and desire's, sounds interesting.

This shot shows a big crowd of people trying to pass by, the police looks like he is stopping cars and letting them go because of the amount of traffic and rush. This shot is also suggesting that this amount of people go to the place where you can fulfill your dreams its trying to convey that lot of people go for example, eight million which seems a lot. The dream place seems well known.

This shot shows four people on the lift, they look so interested to what is above them, the one in middle looks like she's frustrated and the man on the left with the glasses looks scared and worried.the one in the middle also  looks posh, the lady with the brown hat, she looks really amused to what she is seeing. However the way all of their eyes are in different positions and all have different reactions to what their seeing, this can show their looking at the numbers that go from 5,4,3,2,1, and their ready to get off at the number their going to stop at so their focus is on the numbers above them this can also show their attention is not elsewhere but towards the lifts number which show that they were all in a rush to get out first because their was a massive crowd.

This shot is of a women coming out of the lift and she is smoking, her flames of smoke is everywhere, all we see in this image is white clouds of smoke blown towards her face which can show a dull/blurry atmosphere.

The Submarine Review . . .

The submarine
It's a dark coming-of-age comedy about a lovelorn teenage boy in 1980s Swansea, a Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate has two big ambitions: to save his parents' marriage which is carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. he is worried that his mom is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham, Oliver monitors his parents' sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from his mom to dad.
Meanwhile, Oliver attempts to woo his classmate, Jordana, a self-professed pyromaniac who supervises his journal writing - especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out. Based on Joe Dethroner’s acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge.

The genre of this film is drama and i think the character, Oliver is seen as a weird guy when playing his role in the movie.

analyse of once upon a time in the west . . .

The film features long, slow scenes in which there is very little dialogue and little happens, broken by brief and sudden violence. There is lots of sounds whic sound kind of annoying.

The tone of the film is consistent with the arid semi-desert in which the story unfolds, and imbues it with a feeling of realism that contrasts with the elaborately choreographed gunplay.

the sounds throughout the movie are loud and disturbing, however the images used show different types of shot that is presented for example; close-up shot & long shot.
However the film was successful and was the most prosperity in the western films that was made.

Questions & Answers

How does a film get made, who is involved and what are their jobs?
The process of making a film, from an initial story, idea, or commission, through scriptwriting, shooting, editing, directing and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a television program. Filmmaking takes place all over the world in a huge range of economic, social, and political contexts, and using a variety of technologies and cinematic techniques. Typically, it involves a large number of people, and takes from a few months to several years to complete, although it may take longer if there are production issues. The producer, who decides if the idea could be made into a great film. It's their job to pitch the idea to get money for the film. They also choose who will write the script, and who will the director can visualise a script and make it a reality.

What does a director do?

Directors will make the big decisions. Writers will give those scripts, but directors get to interpret those scripts and decide how they should become movies, plays, or TV shows. Actors perform, but directors will decide if they need to be funnier, be more serious, say their lines faster, or any other number of small changes to fit the overall vision of the show. Directors also help cast (find actors,) help choose music, and help decide on costumes. In animation, they may even help choose the colours that will be used. They certainly have a lot of people that help them, but the directors’ creative decisions are usually the final ones. It is their responsibility to make sure the film, TV show, or play looks good when it is done. The director directs the action for the movie. He is in total control outside administration things like paychecks. He tells the actors what to do, ensure the sets are right, establishes the camera angles, controls the lighting and has a say in the editing’s.

What comes first, script or finance?
Script comes before finance so this means script comes first.

How can casting help to get the film made?
The casting director finds actors to fill the parts in the script. This normally requires that actors audition. casting process sometimes involves a series of auditions before a casting panel, composed of individuals such as the producer, director and/or choreographer.

In the early stages of the process, performers often may present prepared audition pieces such as monologues or songs. Later stages may involve groups of actors attempting material from the work under consideration in various combinations; the Casting Director considers both the talent of the individual actors and the chemistry of their combination.

Who is responsible for marketing?

The thing to remember is that, in reality, the marketing department crosses over into the entire company. Everyone in your company should be aware of the marketing message, visions, and goals of the company, and should reflect that message in everything they do that is related to the product and your customers. This is referred to as Integrated Marketing Communications, and means that every contact with customers and potential customers, whether it's through advertising, personal contact, or other means, should carry a consistent message about the company and product. In effect, every employee is a sales person, and every employee is a customer service representative. If they give mixed messages about what your business is, then your customers and potential customers will have a distorted picture.

Where do ideas for films come from?

The ideas come from everywhere, for example internet, magazine, newspaper, books and talking about it through conversations and radio.

How does a film reach the right audience?

By communication, the intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver or by marketing.

Analysis of the opening scene of three movies . . .

Seven

The opening scene, the music sounds creepy and gloomy, Then genre seemed as it was horror or a thriller psychological scene.
The background red/brown and black created a picture of the sense of the genre.

Sound; music track was a slow paste and sounded creepy, it grabs peoples attention and the sound track is non-diagetic.

The connotation puts you on the edge, makes you nervous and the words jump out at you, it sounds as if the movies going to be horror.
the editing of the scene we watched had different shots and the focus changes which grabs our attention.

The Iconography:
Cut up pictures which suggested the targets
The scribbling of the face portrayed death
Creating a book which showed a task and the razor blade which suggested an icon very sharp and dangerous.

Delicatessen

The start of the scene was rattling noises which sounded creepy, then the scraping noise made me feel as if something horrid was going to happen, however the zoom in of the shot of the black background looked scary and frightening.
The knife suggesting danger/killing. The set in shows its not in a real world, most of the shots are zoomed in to show a close up of the scene.

The way the man pops up from the bin and he's peaking, with his eyes popping out. He seemed really scared and terrified. The man holding knife and bringing it forward towards him suggested he was going to kill him, the snap shot of the knife ending with the title showed that this film will be horror.

City of god

Then scarping of knife at the start portrays killing/danger, However the tone of music sounds like a adventure. The blood on the plate looked disgusting, looked as if something got killed.
The way the people were running after the chicken showed the paste of chicken was fats so it was hard for them too catch it.
The car came, the chicken was under it, at first it felt as if the chicken got crushed but however it didn't and the guys standing in front took their guns out if the other guy didn't save the chicken then they would have killed him.
At the end the boys monologue felt as if he had to do what the men said and if he didn't save the chicken then they would have killed him which portrayed he was in danger and threatened by the mens.

Denotations & Connotations in the Three Colours Blue

Denotation;
What is actually in the scene, the devoid of emotion, attitude, and color and what we see and hear.
Connotation;
It’s what we see in the film/movie, also suggesting the meaning or emotion; however it’s also described as something being positive or negative.

Director; a polish guy

The denotations we see in the first part of the film is we hear and see a car, a person inside the car and her windows open she leans over and rustles a piece of aluminium foil outside the window, however we also see a car passing and the car gets hit towards the tree and little girl runs away.

The connotations we see is oil dripping which show a close up shot and the camera movement goes side to side which means this is a panning shot, which also suggest that the dripping shows a sign of life drifting away that’s why the car had an accident.

In this part of the scene the father seems really tired and exhausted because he’s droved alot. The colour of the scene portrays it was set out early in the morning.

First Five Minutes, Review of Three Movie's

[East is East]

The first introduction had a slow music introduction to make it seem interesting and it started off with who and what was in the movie, it’s a movie of a English women who married a Pakistani man and they had two kids, one was religious and the other one didn’t want to be same race as parent. However it’s a comedy/drama.

East is east is about cultural differences and the difficulties of assimilation. It's about the dangers of losing one's unique identity when leaving behind one country for another. Above all, however, it's about family dynamics, and how children inevitably rebel against their parents' beliefs and traditions - that's how they grow and become independent.

it became a film festival hit before being released in its country of origin.

 [The Inbetweeners]

The second film I watched was the inbetweeners, the start of the movie portray the showing of the film and title; it also tells us when the film was released and the background music was jolly, however its one of those movies where you can watch again and again and again and you wouldn’t get bored of it, its comedy and has a good storyline.

 [Kite Runner]

The third film I watched was kite runner, the opening scene showed images of the main theme of the film and the background song was slow, however it was a emotional film it had a interesting storyline. It’s also an international best-selling movie.

The film's most wider interest in themes of guilt, displacement, honour and conflicting traditions, while his sensitivity to the emotional responses of his characters – both adult and child – is never overwhelmed nor upstaged by his incorporation of challenging dramatic scenes (such as a startlingly brutal stoning of an adulterous couple in a Kabul stadium). Likewise, the film’s belief in the power of redemption and its subtle assertion of the need for moral courage in personal (or political) conflict is never allowed to get in the way of its boldly told, intelligent, informed and affecting story.

The media is vital to modern life

Power of the media can transform the whole society especially in the developing countries it can be used as a 'weapon of mass destruction'. But I think the most important use of media is to educate the people about the basic human rights.

In my opinion media plays a vital role in everyone's life. It solves their problems. It gives them choices as many new media and channels are coming up. Yes sometimes it sensationalizes the news items but again I feel that media is something that is must for today. It helps and provides vital information to the people.

The mass media allow us to find out what is happening around the world. This shows that the media is important because it allows us to find out information from around the world, however we also use the media for our own uses such as socialization, communication and entertainment and this may cause us to become too attached and rely on it.

Media plays an important role. It’s a mirror of the society. It's duty is to inform, educate and entertain the people but nowadays we see that media is not doing its duty honestly. Instead of giving important information and educative programme it is giving emphasis to sensationalize the public.  Power of the media can transform the whole society especially in the developing countries it can be used as a 'weapon of mass destruction'. But I think the most important use of media is to educate the people about the basic human rights.
The dilemma of the developing countries is that people are not fully aware of their basic rights and if they know, they don't know about what to do and where to go. They don't know their collective strength. Even they don't know how to protest and what is the importance of protests. Media should portray the facts. They should not transform the reality. Education and discipline is key to progress. This is the difference between a nation and a crowd. Media men have access to people and they have an audience. Their programs have an impact and people listen to them.

That's why they are more responsible for the betterment of the society. They should work to educate the people, to help the people and to liberate the people and to empower the people. Media plays a very important role in the building of a society. Media has changed the societies of world so much that we can't ignore its importance. First of all we should know what the media is. Media is a source of information or communication.
Media includes sources like print media and electronic media. Newspapers, magazines and any other form, which is written or printed, is included in print media and in electronic, media radio, television and Internet etc. are included.
